APFNet Project “Establishment of High Value Tree Species Breeding Center in Cambodia” Inception Workshop Officially Launched

The inception workshop for the joint project “Establishment of High Value Tree Species Breeding Center in Cambodia” between the Institute of Forest and Wildlife Research and Development (IRD) and Yunnan Academy of Forestry and Grassland (YAFG) officially launched (Via Zoom ) on June 4th , 2021.

Participants attend the workshop online ( Via Zoom) in Phnom Penh and Siem Reap, Cambodia, and in Beijing and Kunming, China respectively. As the co-organizer of the workshop, the representatives from Yunnan Provincial Science and Technology Department and Department of Commerce of Yunnan Province invited by the YAFG to attend the workshop. President Zhong Mingchuan from the YAFG, in her opening speech, point out the great significance of the cooperation and wish the project a complete success and hope that both sides would continue to strengthen cooperation in forestry research.

Forest germplasm resources are seriously threatened with rapid economic development in both China and Cambodia. Therefore, construction of tree breeding center could be an effective solution that serve as shelter for valuable forest genetic resources.Under such circumstance, on 2018, January 11, Mr. Zhang Jianlong, Director of the State Forestry Administration of China, and Ong Sakkhun, Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries of Cambodia signed an agreement on “Establishment of High Value Tree Species Breeding Center in Cambodia”, witnessed by Premier Li Keqiang and Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen. Under the agreement, China, through the APFNet, will support Cambodia in building a breeding center for high value tree species, help Cambodia strengthen capacity in tree breeding, genetic resources protecting and high-quality plantation materials supply for precious tree species. 

The project aims at to promote forestry science and technology personnel, improve in Cambodia's ability to protect and rationally develop and precious tree species resources  through the establishment of precious tree species breeding center in Cambodia and precious tree planting demonstration garden, collecting, cultivating and protecting local precious tree germplasm resources in order to enhance the capacity building and their abilities for the conservation and utilization of the precious tree species resources on the basis of the demonstration for the sustainable development and utilization of technology.

The project is funded by the APFNet with duration of eight years . YAFG will serve as technique supporting agency that responsible for providing comprehensive technical support and implement part of project activities while the IRD is the implementer for the project.
