The BD-Flightin gene was cloned from Bactrocera dorsalis, and its expression and function were tested by Green Forest Disease and Pest Control Discipline Team led by Professor Chen Peng. The RNAi study showed that the expression of Flightin and the flight ability of both female and male adults of B. dorsalis were significantly reduced after BD-Flightin dsRNA injection. In addition, silencing the expression of flightin also decreased the weight ratio of thorax and whole-body of B. Dorsalis.100

In addition, silencing Flightin expression also reduced the breast to whole worm weight ratio. These results suggested that flightin plays important roles in flight muscle development and flight function in B. dorsalis, which can potentially be used to control the flight behaviour of the fruit fly. This study is helpful to elucidate the molecular  mechanism of the flight regulation of B. dorsalis, and provide research ideas and target genes for the exploration of a new approach to control B. dorsalis based on flight behavior and RNAi. Molecular and Functional Characterization of the Flightin Gene in the Oriental Fruit Fly, Bactrocera dorsalis, is published online in the Journal of Applied Entomology.
